California Highway Patrol and Bakersfield Initiative Leads to Over 1,000 Arrests
CHP and the Bakersfield Police Department
In a robust response to the rising crime rates in the Central Valley, Governor Gavin Newsom's crime suppression partnership between the California Highway Patrol (CHP) and the Bakersfield Police Department has marked a significant milestone. Since its inception in April, the initiative has led to 1,026 arrests, the recovery of 448 stolen vehicles, and the seizure of 20 firearms linked to criminal activities.
Unprecedented Results in Crime Suppression
The joint efforts have seen remarkable success, particularly in July, with 321 suspects arrested—a 55% increase from the previous month and the highest since the operation began. This surge in arrests underscores the effectiveness of the strategic focus on high-crime areas in Bakersfield, which was targeted to curb organized criminal activities including vehicle theft and violent crimes.
Governor Newsom praised the ongoing collaboration: "We’re continuing our collaborative efforts to provide the residents of the Central Valley with the safety and security that they deserve. I thank the CHP and our law enforcement partners for their ongoing work to take down organized criminal activity and secure justice for this community. We remain committed to working in Bakersfield and across the state to further reduce criminal activity and make our neighborhoods safer."
Expanding Efforts Across Kern County
Building on the success in Bakersfield, Governor Newsom announced an expansion of these efforts through a new partnership with the Kern County Sheriff’s Office. This collaboration aims to dismantle criminal networks that drive retail theft, car thefts, and violent crimes in the broader Kern County area.
CHP Commissioner Sean Duryee expressed optimism about the new partnership: "The California Highway Patrol has a great working relationship with the Kern County Sheriff’s Office, and we are thrilled to welcome them to our ongoing crime suppression operation with the Bakersfield Police Department. This collaboration underscores the strength in numbers and highlights our shared commitment to making the community safer. Together, we can more effectively address and combat crime, ensuring a more secure environment for everyone."
Significant State Investment in Crime Prevention
The state's commitment to fighting crime is further evidenced by the Organized Retail Theft Prevention Grant Program, which awarded $6.2 million to the Bakersfield Police Department. This funding is part of California's largest single investment to combat organized retail crime, focusing on preventing motor vehicle theft, motor vehicle accessory theft, and cargo theft.
Since January 2024, the CHP’s Organized Retail Crime Task Force has made 717 arrests and recovered over a quarter of a million stolen items valued at more than $6.8 million. Governor Newsom’s administration has allocated $1.1 billion since 2019 to enhance public safety, which includes funding local governments to increase police forces and boost crime prevention measures.
